Transportation of children in a car – a responsible and serious task for parents who want to ensure the comfort and safety of their young passengers. Avis will tell you about the key rules for transporting children and important aspects of using car seats.
Key recommendations and rules for transporting children in cars
According to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1306 dated 10.10.2001 on the approval of the Traffic Rules, the transportation of children in a car is subject to the following requirements:
- A child under the age of 12 can be transported in a car only in special restraint devices (car seats) that are attached to the seat in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- Adolescents from 12 to 16 years old can be in a car without a special seat, if their height is not less than 145 cm, and their weight exceeds 36 kg. In other cases, they should also use a car seat or a booster seat.
- Children must wear seat belts or other restraints that are part of the car seat. Safety belts should go over the child's shoulder and chest, not over the neck or stomach.
- Children may not ride in a car without accompanying adults who are responsible for their safety and health.
Transporting children without a car seat can lead to administrative liability in the form of a fine or even deprivation of the right to drive.
Car seat: protection and convenience for small passengers
Car seat – it is not just a means for transporting children in a car, but also an important element of their protection against injuries in the event of an accident. According to the World Health Organization, the use of car seats reduces the risk of death of children from 54% to 80% in the event of a collision.
Some tips to help you choose and properly use a car seat for your child:
- Choose one that has a certificate of compliance with safety standards and is suitable for the age, weight and height of the child. There are 4 groups of car seats. Group I – for children from 9 to 18 kg (from 1 to 4 years), group II – 15-25 kg (3-7 years), group III – from 22 to 36 kg (6-12 years), group IV – from 15 to 36 kg (4-12 years). There are also universal models suitable for several groups at the same time.
- Install the device correctly and check its reliability. The chair can be attached to the car seat using seat belts or a special Isofix system. Make sure it is securely fastened and does not move more than 2 cm in any direction.
- Turn the car seat against the direction of traffic as long as possible. This provides better protection of the baby's head, neck and spine in the event of an impact. Do not forget to turn off the airbag in the front seat.
- Take into account the comfort and convenience of the little one. Make sure the unit has enough height and width for a small passenger, as well as soft, breathable padding. Check that the seat belts do not cut into the body and do not interfere with movement.
